The issue is why doesn't Chirp "see" it? And how can I trace the dataflow from the Chirp request to the Linux interface so I can see what setting or piece of software (middleware?) is missing or needs definition?
That says the device and driver are good. Okay, so I think that's telling me that those apps "see" the device and gtkterm is prepared to communicate. mct_u232: z2.1:Magic Control Technology USB-RS232 converter driver usbcore: registered new interface driver mct_u232 usb 4-2: MCT U232 converter now attached to ttyUSB0

What Ubuntu-Linux tools are available for me to dianose and resolve these problems? With Ubuntu I feel like I'm running blind. My use of strace tells me nothing useful. I have not yet found anything in Ubuntu that lets me know about and track the software stack between the driver (that seems to be present) and the application. For it Windows provides a COM port that I put in Chirp. I am accustomed to the device driver that allows me to see how Windows "sees" the device and resolve problems, especially with the Belkin unit. However Chirp does not "see" the F5U109/F5U409 and jpilot does not see Palm, Inc.

The Ubuntu-Linux drivers appear to be OptiPlex- GX260:~ $ lsusbīus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hubīus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hubīus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hubīus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hubīus 004 Device 011: ID 050d:0109 Belkin Components F5U109/F5U409 PDA Adapterīus 004 Device 012: ID 0830:0061 Palm, Inc. What fails: BelkinF5U409 serial to USB converter and Palm devices in sync mode. What works: iPhone and USB (flash) drives are seen and handled by the Ubuntu file system. I continue to have problems with some applications not "seeing" the usb device connected.
